Summer Dressing For the Office Or Business

With the warmer weather now upon us, many rush out and buy their summer clothes but how many really think about their work or business attire?  Flip flops, micro shorts, strappy vest tops and cropped tops should be left for the beach and not in the office.  On my travels around London I am amazed at what I see. My eyes pop out like golf balls at some of the sights I see going to and from work. I recall in one corporate organisation where I worked, a colleague came into work on a Monday morning dressed like she was still on the beach. Mind you she did live in Brighton! Micro mini skirt, flip flops, sun top.  All that was missing was the big floppy hat and the ice cream cone.

So is your dilemma what do you wear? London's transportation services are like a sauna, no air conditioning, buses with still have their heating on, windows that open yet very little fresh air or breeze coming through. Trains and tubes are the same. Looking fresh when you leave the house only to turn up at the office looking like you’ve just stepped out of a sauna. In the office the air conditioning is blaring, unless you are unlucky to work in an office without air conditioning, using fans or they just open the window hoping for a reprieve from the breeze.

Every workplace has different expectations, even an unspoken dress code. Don’t fall foul of it. Look around, how are your colleagues are dressed?  Still not sure speak to Human Resources team for advice.  Maintaining your professional image at all times is very important. Your choice of clothing should reflect your company’s corporate image. It’s so easy to bring the hem line up and the neck line down because the outside temperatures are rising.  Can't forget the sunglasses, not to be worn in the office!

Are you in a customer facing role? How would you like to be greeted by someone exposing too much flesh? Always remember whatever the season your image is important - because people believe what they see and busy people rely on first impressions.  Micro mini’s and flip flops are not appropriate.

When deciding on your working summer wardrobe you can adapt your winter wardrobe. More dresses than jumpers, light weight clothing, however because temperatures can fluctuate in an office always have a light weight jacket or cardigan to hand.Don’t forget if you are going to business meetings or meeting clients, it’s important to make a good impression and present a professional image
